The Montessori Schools Foundation requests recommendations or expressions of interest for the position of Trustee of Montessori Schools Foundation

The Montessori Schools Foundation was established in 2004. The Montessori Schools Foundation is registered in England and Wales, Charity Number 1106446.

Aims and Objectives

The aims of the Charity are to advance education (including social and physical education) through methods of learning and education developed by Maria Montessori and in connection with this:
  • To fund the attendance of children and young people, in cases of financial hardship, at facilities conducted by the Foundation.
  • To lead the Foundation in its bid to become a state school in order to enhance the development and education of children and young people.
  • Such development to include the promotion, support and enabling of health and well-being (intellectual, physical and emotional), social cohesion, equality, inclusion and diversity.
  • To lead to expansion of the school into areas of Brighton and Hove that will increase school places for children above the age of 4.
  • To strengthen relationships between Montessori organizations in the UK and internationally.
The role of the Board of Trustees is to:
  • Determine the school’s overall business and marketing strategy within the policy and resource framework
  • Use the combined expertise of members to advise the Director
  • Oversee the delivery of planned results by monitoring performance against objectives and targets.
The term of appointment is three years, with the possibility of renewal for one further three-year term. Trustees serve on a voluntary basis, but reasonable expenses (such as travel) are paid. The likely total time commitment is the equivalent of one day per month. Board meetings are held at Brighton and Hove Montessori at 67 Stanford Avenue, Brighton. The role may also include serving on a number of Sub-Committees of the Board, the meetings of which are likely to amount to between five and eight a year.

Skills

An individual is sought with a strong background in any or a number of the following:  law, education, children’s charities, fundraising, marketing and PR, business strategy and government – local and/or national. Candidates should therefore be able to demonstrate that they are able to combine several of the skills given below:
  • Leadership experience in business, charity or education sectors
  • Knowledge of and experience in children’s education and/or charitable sector
  • Knowledge of Montessori and its philosophy

Candidates should also be able to demonstrate:

  • A passion for the mission of Brighton & Hove Montessori and a willingness to represent and advocate for the school in the public realm;
  • The ability to contribute to the discussion at Board level of wider policy and strategy development;
  • The willingness to act as advocate in helping raise funds for Brighton & Hove Montessori,
  • Good communication skills and a commitment to equal opportunities and diversities.
